Education activist Hendrick Makaneta is encouraging young South Africans to consider technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges when applying for the 2027 academic year.

Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has urged young South Africans to reconsider their choices after high school and prioritise Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges for the 2027 academic year.

The call comes as the application window for TVET institutions remains open, with prospective students facing a deadline of September 30 to submit their applications.

Makaneta called on young people to challenge the common belief that TVET colleges are simply backup choices for those who do not get accepted into traditional universities.

“Going to a TVET college should not be seen as a failure, or as something you do only when you cannot get into university,” Makaneta said.

He advised prospective applicants to focus on selecting qualifications aligned with their specific career ambitions and personal interests.

Makaneta highlighted the practical value of vocational training, noting that TVET colleges equip students with workplace-ready technical skills and foster pathways toward entrepreneurship. 

He noted that expanding access to fields such as engineering, construction, business, hospitality, and information technology could significantly alleviate South Africa's high youth unemployment rate.

However, he cautioned that realising the full potential of the sector requires greater state investment to improve institutional infrastructure and ensure high-quality training.

“TVET colleges give young people practical skills that can help them to find jobs, or even start their own businesses. But the government must also make sure that these colleges have proper facilities and enough equipment for students,” he added.

As thousands of school leavers navigate career decisions for 2027, prospective students are strongly encouraged to research local TVET offerings, evaluate labor market needs, and complete their applications ahead of the closing date.
