Wife leaves after fight, upset man posts suicide note on Facebook, jumps into Ganga

A 26-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi attempted suicide by jumping into the Ganga after going live on Facebook and showing a two-page suicide note. The man, identified as Ankit Kumar, alleged during the livestream that he was being harassed by his wife's family.

Fishermen present near the river rescued Ankit after he jumped into the Ganga and informed his family. Before reaching the river, Ankit went live on Facebook. During the livestream, he held up a two-page suicide note and said he was taking the step because of alleged harassment by his in-laws.

Ankit named several people during the livestream, including Rajesh from Kasariya, Sonu from Barmatpur, Lavkush, Panna Lal, Shivdani, Piyush and Prateek. He alleged that they had harassed and threatened him.

He also claimed that he had complained to the Kaushambi police about the matter around a year ago.

After showing the suicide note and speaking about the alleged harassment, Ankit reached the Ganga near Basedi and jumped into the river.

Fishermen at the spot saw him in the water and pulled him out. They then informed his family, following which police and relatives reached the spot.

According to Ankit's family, he had married Priya, who is from Prayagraj, around one-and-a-half years ago. The couple have a child.

The family said Ankit and Priya had an argument over a mobile phone on Tuesday. After the dispute, Priya left for her parents' home with the child.

Ankit's family alleged that after Priya went to her parents' home, her father and brother assaulted Ankit.

On Wednesday morning, Ankit was reportedly distressed and crying while missing his wife and child. He then went live on Facebook and spoke about the dispute and alleged harassment.

Ankit's father, Ram Bahadur, also gave a statement about the incident.ANKIT ALLEGES THREATS AND ASSAULT

During the Facebook Live, Ankit said he had been troubled by his wife's family and held them responsible for his decision to end his life.

He alleged that members of his wife's family had come to his house the previous day, misbehaved with him and assaulted him. He pointed to an injury near his eye while speaking during the livestream.

Ankit further alleged that he had been receiving threats over the phone, including threats that cases would be filed against him. He said he had repeatedly complained about the situation but that the issue had not been resolved.

He also claimed that members of his wife's family would visit his home and try to settle the dispute, but said the situation continued.

During the livestream, Ankit specifically referred to Prateek as his wife's brother and named several other people whom he alleged were involved in harassing him.

He also made an appeal to his younger and elder brothers before ending the livestream.

After Ankit was rescued from the river, he was taken to a health centre for treatment. He is currently undergoing treatment in serious condition.

Ankit is reportedly a contractual employee with the Nagar Palika Parishad Bharwari.

Police had received information about the incident and said that an investigation was underway.
