A government school teacher in Gujarat’s Rajkot has been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old student after promising her "I'll get you good grades in mathematics" and threatening to fail her if she refused to comply. The alleged sexual abuse, which reportedly began when the girl was in Class 8, came to light nearly eight months later, after she broke down before her mother and narrated the ordeal.

The accused, identified as Mohit Tank, is a mathematics teacher at the government-run Mother Teresa School No. 88 in Rajkot.

Police arrested him on Friday, October 2, after the girl’s mother approached the Taluka police station and lodged a complaint. A case has been registered under stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, including provisions relating to rape.

According to the complaint, the girl had studied at Mother Teresa School No. 88 from 2023 to 2026, covering Classes 6 to 8, before moving to Bardanwala Kanya Vidyalaya, where she is currently studying in Class 9.

Her mother said she noticed that her daughter appeared unusually nervous and distressed on September 23.

The woman questioned her daughter and encouraged her to speak about what was troubling her. The teenager allegedly broke down and recounted her experience involving Tank.

According to the complaint, the teacher had told her during her Class 8 period, "I'll get you through math with good marks; I like you very much".

He allegedly used the promise of good grades to gain her confidence and later threatened to fail her in mathematics if she did not follow his instructions.

The complaint alleges that the first major incident occurred on January 9, 2026. The girl reportedly reached school at around 7.15 am, when Tank, who was in the office, allegedly called her and said, "We have to go home".

When she refused and began climbing the stairs, the teacher allegedly followed her, pulled her schoolbag and threatened her.

He instructed her to tell anyone who asked that he had forgotten his book and was taking her home.

He also warned her, "If you don't listen to me, I will fail you in maths". According to the complaint, the frightened student was subsequently taken by the teacher in his car to his secluded flat, the complaint said.

The teacher then raped the girl inside the bedroom of the flat and later dropped her a short distance from the school at around 8.30 am, the complaint states.

The abuse did not end there. Police said the teacher subsequently called the student to empty classrooms through other students and sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions until April 20.

The complaint also alleges that Tank repeatedly used threats to keep the girl from revealing the abuse.

On one occasion, he told her, "If you don't do as I say, I will fail you and cut myself with a blade". The girl, fearing the consequences of speaking out, allegedly kept the incidents to herself until she eventually told her mother.

Police said Tank has been working as a government teacher since 2010 and had previously served at several schools, including institutions in Rajkot and Dhrrol and Jamjodhpur in Jamnagar district. He had been posted at Mother Teresa School No. 88 for around three years.

Following his arrest, investigators are examining the allegations and gathering further evidence. Police are also looking into whether Tank may have similarly threatened or sexually exploited any other female students during his teaching career.

Further investigation is underway.- Ends
