Woman cuts own hand, threatens suicide outside cop's office over harassment inaction

A woman arrived outside the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut on Wednesday carrying a knife. She threatened to kill herself, alleging that police had failed to act on her complaint against a man who had been harassing her for nearly a month.

The woman, identified as Veena Chaudhary, remained outside the SSP office for around half an hour, refusing to put the knife down despite repeated attempts by police personnel to calm her. She also cut her left hand with the knife and threatened to take her own life.

The incident triggered panic outside the office, with a crowd gathering at the spot. The Civil Lines police were alerted and rushed to the scene. After trying to persuade the woman to put the knife down, police eventually managed to restrain her and take the weapon away.

She was subsequently taken to the police station.

The woman alleged that a man named Vinay had been harassing her for around a month. She said she had approached the police several times with a complaint, but no concrete action had been taken.

“I have repeatedly told the man not to disturb me as I am married and a mother of two children,” Chaudhary said. “However, he did not listen and even told me that he would come to my home to meet me,” she added.

Frustrated by his behaviour, Chaudhary said she once went to the man's village to confront him. However, she said she faced difficulties there as well, with villagers accusing her of arriving drunk to meet her ‘boyfriend’. She said they also humiliated her by calling her ‘drunk’ and ‘stupid’.

Following the incident, a senior cop from Meerut City Police, Vinayak Gopal Bhonsle, said the woman had attempted to injure herself; however, the police took swift action and prevented her from doing so.

He said the woman had suffered minor injuries and was being provided medical treatment.
