Woman finds no prices on Italy restaurant menu, husband's copy tells different story

The bill was the same, but the menus were not. A finance content creator dining with her husband at a luxury hotel in Italy noticed that her menu had no prices, while his listed them fully.

This discovery sparked a debate over whether the old-fashioned practice still belongs at the dinner table in this century.

Creator Liana Danielle was at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Italy’s Lake Como, when she noticed something missing in the menus placed in front of them.

“In Italy, they do something different with the menus for men than women. We were looking at the menu and there was no price on it. And then, he said, Wait, I see the prices,” Liana said in her Instagram video.

“They only put the prices on the man’s menu,” she added.

Liana said this was not the first time she had encountered the practice, claiming she had noticed the same arrangement at a three-Michelin-star restaurant in Rome.

She later updated her caption with an unexpected consequence of the price-less menu. While she initially said, “I like not knowing the prices," the final bill made her reconsider.

She revealed that she unknowingly ordered two drinks costing $120 (approx Rs 11,514) and a birthday dessert priced at $140 (approx Rs 13,433). Including the tip, their total bill came to $926.86 (approx Rs 88,947).

Speaking about the bill, Liana said she had estimated the meal would cost less. Although the expense was manageable because they had set aside money in a high-yield savings account for food, shopping and taxis during their trip, she wished she had been able to see the prices.

“If the food was incredible, it would have been worth it. But the food wasn’t anything extraordinary,” she wrote.

Her video, which has garnered more than 4.1 million views, prompted a strong reaction from women in the comments. Some questioned the idea of hiding prices from women at a time when conversations around equality and financial independence remain prominent.

One Instagram user wrote, “Regardless of who is paying, I want to know the prices. I appreciate transparency.”

Another user offered a historical perspective, saying, “It is classic and elegant. Country clubs and private dinner clubs in the US used to do the same as recent as the early 2000s.”

Liana Danielle later posted another video with the caption, “This seems like the perfect opportunity to level up our finances, right ladies?” turning the unexpected dining experience into a lesson about being more deliberate with money.
