SEOUL -- South Korea recorded about 20 days of heat wave conditions so far this year, nearly double the long-term average over the same period, the state weather agency said Tuesday.

The nation had experienced 20.1 days under such conditions as of Monday, compared with the long-term average of 10.4 days, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

JEJU, South Korea -- A Jeju police officer accused of wrongfully closing a missing person case that may have led to the woman's death attended an arrest warrant hearing at a court on the southern resort island Tuesday.

The Jeju District Court began the officer's arrest warrant hearing at 2:30 p.m. on charges of dereliction of duty, forgery, falsifying public electronic records and obstruction of official duties through deception.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Tuesday, recouping earlier losses, as investors awaited major corporate earnings results this week, including those from U.S. chip giant Nvidia. The Korean won fell against the U.S. dollar.

After opening 2.4 percent lower, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) pared its losses to close 45.78 points, or 0.68 percent, higher at 6,742.74.

SEOUL -- U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel has met with her Japanese counterpart and stressed the importance of continued three-way cooperation among Seoul, Washington and Tokyo, the U.S. envoy's social media post showed Tuesday.

In her post on X uploaded the previous day, Steel said she had "a thoughtful conversation with Japanese Ambassador Mizushima Koichi on the opportunities ahead" for trilateral cooperation among the United States, South Korea and Japan.
