YouTuber Savukku Shankar gets 3-year jail term over remarks against newsreader

A Chennai court on Tuesday sentenced YouTuber Savukku Shankar to three years in prison in a case concerning remarks against a female newsreader.

The Egmore Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court convicted Shankar under provisions of the law on the prevention of harassment of women.

The case centred on remarks the prosecution said were defamatory and targeted the newsreader working for Sun TV.

The court has given Shankar 30 days to file an appeal. It was not immediately clear whether the sentence would be suspended during that period or whether he would seek bail.
