Yulo brothers shine in qualification round as Asian Games gymnastics begins - GMA Network

Carlos and Eldrew Yulo set the tone for the Philippine men's artistic gymnastics team as the brothers dazzled in the qualification round to kick off the country’s 2026 Asian Games campaign in Japan on Monday.

The 18-year-old Eldrew wasted no time making his mark in his Asian Games debut, currently leading the individual all-around standings after Subdivision 1 with 77.264 points. Older brother and two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos follows closely in second with 75.465 points.

But while Carlos and Eldrew emerged atop the standings after Subdivision 1, the Filipinos are not yet assured of a spot in the finals as they await the results of Subdivision 2 later, which features gymnasts from Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Korea, and Kazakhstan.

Eldrew shone on the parallel bars and horizontal bar, scoring 14.266 and 13.433 points, respectively, to lead both apparatus after the morning session.

Both Eldrew and Carlos also impressed on the floor exercise, with the older Yulo posting 14.600 points in his pet event that he won a Paris Olympics medal in while his younger brother tallied 13.966.

But the brothers struggled in the vault, rings, and pommel horse. Carlos had a fall on the landing of his first vault attempt and finished with 13.649 points, while Eldrew had no recorded result after completing just one vault.

In the pommel horse, Carlos had 8.233 and Eldrew had 11.733 while in the rings, they scored 13.500 and 11.666, respectively.

Other Filipino gymnasts also opened their campaigns, with Juancho Miguel Besana sitting sixth in the individual all-around with 70.898 points while Justine Ace De Leon and Zachary Nuñez both landed outside the top 10.
