Zeynep Sönmez continued her strong form on the WTA Tour by advancing to the second round of the Madrid Open after defeating Spain’s Carlota Martínez Círez in straight sets.

The 23-year-old, currently ranked world No. 67, overcame her Spanish opponent ranked No. 352 in a competitive opening set before pulling away to secure a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Sönmez showed resilience early in the match, saving three set points in a tense first set before closing it out. She then dominated the second set with more controlled baseline play to seal a 2-0 win and book her place in the next round of the WTA 1000 event.

She will now face another Spanish player, 27th seed Cristina Bucsa, in what is expected to be a tougher test in the second round.

The result marks another step forward in Sönmez’s growing presence on the international tennis stage, as she continues to establish herself among rising names in women’s tennis.
